..... THE RTE programme High Society wasn't the only one to have its knuckles rapped this week. Prime Time had to issue a grovelling apology for allowing panellists on a programme aired some months ago to use the term 'basket case'.
The Broadcasting Complaints Commission said: "The context in which the term 'basket case' was used could be considered to stigmatise people with mental illness and therefore was likely to cause offence."
And I have to admit that as a person with a self-confessed mental illness, I was rather offended myself. I mean 'basket case'? A tad dated, surely.
But I wasn't offended enough to write in and complain about it. God knows, if every time I heard mental illness referred to in a derogatory manner and got upset about it, I'd go mad -- and perhaps even end up a basket case myself!

And is a "self-confessed" mental illness the same as a "The-Head-of-Bellevue's-Psychiatric-Hospital-diagnosed" mental illness??
If so, I think I'll start using the former description ~ it is much easier to say.
